Katz: McDermott's choice

Postby marq » Thu Apr 11, 2013 8:51 am

1. Creighton's Doug McDermott is nowhere near close to making a decision on whether to declare for the NBA or return to the Bluejays, his father and coach Greg McDermott said. Greg McDermott said Doug will take this call down to the NBA's April 28 deadline -- the only one that really matters. Doug McDermott isn't feeling any pressure about the April 16 NCAA deadline -- and that's good, because that one means nothing. The NCAA doesn't put out a list on that date and neither does the NBA. The only deadline that produces an early-entry list is the April 28 deadline. A player could say he's returning to school next week and then declare 12 days later without any issue.

Doug McDermott has one of the toughest decisions of any player, because if he decides to leave his dad will face a difficult season in the Bluejays' first season in the new Big East. If Doug stays, Creighton has a chance to contend for the new league's title.

Really? I didn't think Creighton would contend next season. I'd love to see him come back though and I think he will.

With McD, they'd have a chance for top 1/2 which will be enough for a NCAA bid. Either way, they have no real chance of contending for a title though

They'll be picked 5-7

Would be great for the league and for the Bluejays if Doug did come back. Does the weaker draft class end up as a tiebreaker?
Big East Basketball is what it's always been. Great competition nightly.
If the Atlantic 10 didn't suck, why is everyone looking for the exits?
There is a reason why the A-10 left a team in the Central Time Zone...SLU, your move.

This will be a great league to watch. I do think it's a bit early to say that with McD we may have a shot at the top half and that is as good as it gets. Reputations are everything. Hell, WIch St ends up #4 for a three week run after they got beat by CU twice in a week. Losing Greg E. and Gibbs are both big losses. We have potential big guys that may be better offensively, but I would have loved to watch Greg E in the Big East. He outplayed both the two No Car big guys in the tournament as well as Plumlee this year. There are question marks, but if the Jays can find a two juco that can score and our bigs advance it will be a competitive team in the Big East. That's why they play the games - WSU from the Valley is a great example. I also realize the Big East is a bigger, stronger than the Valley; however, CU did beat some very physical/ahtletic teams this year in Wisc, Wich St (2), and Cinn. We all know it's going to be a tough league and it may take us a year or two to adjust for the guards, but I like the bigs we have and have signed ( two of which Marq and Wisc were after). Go Big East!

I don't see the advantage of going. Let's say he is a borderline 1st rounder now, he will probably be the same next year. If the kid likes college he should stay. And while I'm sure he would like the paycheck I don't think he needs to money to support his family or anything.

Watched Doug a lot.

Seems like a great kid as well as a tremendous player.

Not the easiest combo to find.

Unfortunately, this year's NBA draft is projected as much weaker than next year's.
That will drive some underclassmen who should stay in college another year as well as some players like McD who look prepared for the next level.
Selfishly for CU & the BE I'd like to see him stay, much as I'd like most players to stay.

If & where you go in the 1st round have huge consequences.
"The CBA outlines each pick of the draft with how much they will receive per season. The number one pick will obviously make the most, while the 30th pick will make the least of all first round selections. Second round picks are not guaranteed an NBA contract and will likely receive the league minimum if signed after training camp. All first round contracts are for three years with a team option for the fourth."

Almost all of the possible entrants have made a statement one way or the other. I'm surprised to have not heard anything from the McDermotts. What further info could they be waiting on unless they just want to drag it out the very end to say he'll stay and look like the savior.

The "problem" is if you're McDermott you could actually get drafted in the first round of this year's draft. Isn't going to happen next year with how deep the draft is going to be. Heck, Kentucky could have 8 or 9 guys by themselves drafted ahead of where he would likely be at. I think at this point they probably know whether or not he'll be back, but it's a tough decision and he's better off waiting to see who all goes into the draft to figure out where his draft stock may eventually fall. I think that's more what they're waiting for to make a final choice. If he thinks he'll end up in the first round this year, you pretty much have to go for the guaranteed money, IMO. If not, you might as well come back.

Everyone keeps saying next year's draft is so deep. How is that possible considering virtually every player worth a damn in college has declared for this year's draft?
