Thought Big East fans might be interested in this, since Patton sort of blew up late on the recruiting radar and is a bit of an unknown outside of Omaha:

Justin played in the Kentucky Derby Classic, a loaded all-star game in Louisville featuring a ton of HS All-Americans. He was matched up primarily against Thomas Bryant who is headed to Indiana. Patton dropped 17 pts on 7-9 shooting.

Now, it's an All-Star game so take it with a grain. But from all indications, he impressed a lot of people there.

In their final rankings, Rivals has Patton at #24 overall and a 5 star recruit.

Last 5 star recruit to come to Creighton? Benoit Benjamin.

@cucoachmac: After a long talk with @JustinPatton17 tonight, we mutually agreed that a redshirt is in his best interest. He has a bright future ahead!

Great decision! Let the young guy grow stronger and develop. Everyone knows he will be great. No rush. If unfortunately someone gets hurt early season , then you bring him in and burn the redshirt . Very mature attitude from JP and he knows the coaches have his best interest at heart. Last year, two of CU"S best players had to sit out the year (Watson and Huff transfers). Arguably, the same thing will happen again this year with Patton and Marcus Foster (transfer). Adding those two next year with what we have back and CU will be in nice position in the next several years. Can't wait to watch this year's team surprise people as well.

Dam that's a loaded squad next year with these 4 players alone. Doesn't Harrell Jr. have major upside also?

Watson
Foster
Huff
Patton

I love the BEast!!!

Yes, he does. We are finally looking like a BE team. We will likely start a freshman at the 2 K. Thomas 6'2' with a 6'10" wingspan- that's not a typo. Patton can do things none of our other bigs can do, but needs to get stronger. Great hands, passer, handles the ball, shot blocker.

About 98% of the pósters on CU's 2 main boards have climbed aboard the Redshirt Patton bandwagon, including several who were previously against it. Supposedly even the coaching staff was divided ("torn") on this decision.

Maybe I am too old school. Imo players "develop" through playing...not vía the scout team and riding the pine. Patton is one of 10-12 long, lean, supposedly underweight 2015 (top 25 centers) posts. It appears he is the sole center in that group to be redshirting. I have never heard of a top 25-50 recruit (not a Medical RS) redshirting in a major conference...this has to be a first.

Oh well... Let us see what transpires...

"Top tier teams rarely have true "down" years and find a way to stay relevant every year." - Adoraz
