Is 13-14 Big East a continuation of 12-13 Big East?

Has their been any insight on how the transition works? Will we be considered the continuation as part of getting the name or will the Aresco group be the continuation with a name change? Neither?

The new conference is a continuation of the Big East and will retain all historical records of the conference since it formed in 1979... Hopefully that's what you were asking.

Just how branding works in the legal world. Everything tied to the name comes with it. You can't separate the two. It's the main reason they fought for (and spent so much on) the name. They wanted the branding and the history. They didn't give up a good portion of $100 million just for seven letters with a space in the middle.

When you really think about it, the C7 are keeping the Big East brand, name, history, records, etc, so therefore it is the C7 that are kicking out the "leftovers" and keeping the Big East in many ways (rather than the C7 that are "leaving the Big East"). The "old" Big East leftovers have been cast aside and left to figure out how to pick up the pieces, they are starting from scratch in more ways than the C7 is.

This post from a few days ago over on the Boneyard (UCONN) conference realignment forum sums it up nicely:

"This is Bizarro World reality. Providence College & the rest of the C-7 get everything of value: MSG for tourney, Big East name, & UConn and the rest of the leftovers get closet space in downtown Providence for their fax machine. Is Suzie[I think that's UCONN's AD or something] REALLY agreeable to this just to keep the monies that UConn rightfully earned?
WOW!

On another thread the question of which is "the conference" came up. The most important aspect being the existing automatic NCAA Tournament bid.

A poster seemed certain that the football schools are entitled to the bid in the eyes of the NCAA. Therefore the New Big East would have to apply for an additional automatic bid, bringing the total to 32 if approved. Both factions will meet the 2011-revised NCAA requirements (7 schools offering @ least 6 men's & 6 women's sports, including both M & W basketball). Does anyone foresee an issue w/ the NCAA getting this taken care of w/in one season to insure both leagues getting auto-bids regardless of who is "the new conference"? Of course I'm biased & believe that the bid should go along w/ the league name, history & records.

The BEFBS will retain the current auto bid. The bid is not tied in anyway to the name or the history. The bid is awarded to a entity by the NCAA. Technically the entity can change its name, sell its name, sell its history, heck the history could have been sold off year by year to the highest bidder. Therefore the footballschools are still the conference that has the auto-bid as far as the NCAA is concerned. Just because they have a new name there is no difference. Yes they sold the old name, and they sold the history but the NCAA does not award bids to history and names. However the C7 leaving as 7 schools guarantees them a auto-bid being awarded. That was the reason for adding Marquette and Depaul as bb only schools all those years ago.

So we would keep the football history, too?

This is actually really important and deserves its own thread. It is absolutely crucial that the new Big East (C7) gets an auto bid, and hopefully one next year. To be taken seriously they need an auto bid. How likely/unlikely is that to happen? The media hasn't really mentioned it at all.

Possible... they might have negotiated that separate. The thing about rights to history. you can sell it anyway you want. you could have sold it even years basketball and odd years in football to the C7 and odd years in basketball to the BEFBS and heck they could have sold the Even years of football to the MAAC. I think logically the football schools would have kept the football history and the C7 the basketball. but who knows. (lol the C7 schools might have had to pay extra not to get stuck with the recent BEFBS football history  )
