2014 SG Edmond Sumner (Xavier)

Haven't seen him play yet but a from a few clips/reports makes me think potential Semaj Criston 2.0. Right now his team Detroit Country Day is 3-1 and ranked in the top 5 in Michigan & apparently he had a great Battle of the Best Showcase in Detroit over the weekend.:

Recent Reviews:

Battle Of The Best Recap: How many basketball tournaments can you go to and see the top senior, junior, sophomore and freshman players in the state in one place? Not many. The Battle of the Best, held at Renaissance High, had all of that and more. Twelve of the best basketball programs in the state and dozens of the best prospects squared-off in the event. Several under the radar players had good games, but star power ruled this event.

Detroit Country Day 2014 shooting guard Edmond Sumner:
The Yellowjackets were down nine at the half to Detroit Cass Tech, until Sumner went on an offensive tear in the third. The 6-3 guard commit scored nine straight points at one point to give his team the lead. Sumner finished with 30 on the night, and led his team to victory. His coach called him the best player in the state after the game, and his performance with his team down backed up that statement. Sumner is committed to Xavier.

Battle Of The Best Recap: Go ahead, say Country Day has lost too much to be a legitimate Class B contender. But never put anything out of reach for the Yellow Jackets when they have Xavier commit Edmond Sumner, who had 30 points in the win. Sumner is the total package when it comes to point guards. Size, speed, athleticism, can pass, shoot, dribble all are characteristics to describe Edmond’s game. But what has changed the most about Edmond this year is that he is willing to score anytime he has the ball. Last year, it was easy to give the ball of to Lehigh’s Austin Price, Mory Diane, and Poet Thomas, and let them run the show. However, this is Edmond’s team, and Country will need to let their Mr. Basketball candidate make plays for them if they want to make a return trip to the Breslin Center come March.

All-Best of the Best Team: 6'5" 2014 combo guard Edmond Sumner (Detroit Country Day) He left little doubt that he is the leader for Michigan's 2014 Mr. Basketball Award as he dropped a smooth 30 from everywhere in what many mentioned was an upset win. The Xavier signee kept it on cruise control for most of the game but turned it up in crunch time.

2014 Mr. Basketball Preview: Long, lanky, very good athlete, perimeter and mid-range pull up shooter, plays fearless, solid defender, competes. Sumner can be seen as the front runner as he is the lone candidate on this list to win a state title. State title's help and the Xavier commit is a seen as a top three player in 2014. He should consistently put up very good numbers as he did with 27 in a loss to Walled Lake Western and 20 in a victory over Windsor CC.

How he compares to Semaj:

Similar heights (6'3" or so), which coupled with good court vision, allows him to see the court very well.
MUCH better shooter - Shot something like 40% from 3-point range last year, and he has a good pull-up jumper.
Really good at getting into the lane and making plays.
Great passer.
Highly athletic.
Doesn't have the same level of explosiveness, which is what really sets Semaj apart as an NBA prospect. Still explosive, which lets him get by opponents easily, but just not at that elite level.
Doesn't finish at the rim as well. Decent, but Semaj is fantastic at completing plays when he gets to the rim.
Scrawny compared to Semaj. Semaj is two years older and has spent a good amount of time in a prep school and then university weight room, so we'll see how Sumner fills out. He's still only 18, but this scrawniness combined with the guard depth next year (with or without Semaj) might make him a good candidate for a redshirt.

Me too! He committed so long ago (May), that I think he sometimes gets forgotten by Xavier fans who remember the slew of October commitments better.

Per his twitter account in October:

@TF_32: Just left doctors office... 6'4.5 almost legit 6'5” (Edmond Summer)

This is from Dave Telep's blog in July:

• Two years from now, ESPN 100 point guard Edmond Sumner (Detroit/Detroit Country Day) won’t be as woefully skinny as he is now. He’ll be starring in the backcourt for Xavier and folks will wonder why he isn’t playing for one of the bluebloods. This kid has real toughness, a screwball jump shot and court vision.

It really is a screwball shot lol. It's interesting, because it's a low release (better chance of being blocked), but he flicks it up so quickly I don't think a defender can even react in time.
