That's what they said in the press release, but this isn't the case (what else are they gonna say? we're leaving for the New Big East?).

VCU is the second-most Title IX compliant school in Virginia and is more compliant with regard to scholarship proportionality than Georgetown, Providence, Nova, Butler, Richmond, Creighton.

This came out of absolutely nowhere, and while it will take some time to get a team up and running, certainly 12 months is long enough. I can almost 100% guarantee that this was not a long term plan that was "in the works."

Yes, VCU obviously has more NCAA wins than we do because they went to a Final Four and won 5 games that year alone. UR is the only team to win games as a 12, 13, 14 and 15 seed in the tourney and historically was the top "giant killer" in the tourney for years.

I don't knock anything VCU has accomplished – they have earned it. Their fans need to come down a few notches, however.

This would still leave the conference two women's teams short, right? If someone else in the mix all of a sudden announces lacrosse I might buy into this. Until, then, Title IX seems reasonable enough. I do appreciate that you know your school's situation better, though, I'm not saying I'm convinced any of you are wrong.

Affiliates can be brought in. If anything, this is being setup in advance as an offset for men's LAX and/or to close the door on football. Title IX just doesn't make sense because for scholly's we were already in compliance, and for rosters and spending we were well within range of other schools in the state and many schools in the country. Let's just say it's not a development than was really anticipated by much of anyone. Which is unusual. Also, there was a surprise announcement that a $12+ million dollar arena renovation would be undertaken along with the $14+ million dollar new basketball practice facility being constructed. Again, out of the blue and not in previous master plans (the practice facility has been talked about for years). Something's up.

Probably just trying to keep up with our $15M renovation of the Robins Center. Also, starting a men's lacrosse team on top of a women's lacrosse team would probably necessitate a total investment of upwards of $10M+. Considering how VCU had to raise student fees by $50 a head to pay for Shaka's last extension, where is all this money coming from?

On my phone so I'll skip to what's important.

1) The same day VCU announced women's lax, they surprise-announced $12 mill in arena upgrades. Meanwhile, the practice facility was in the works for years.
2) "The student fee at VCU is ranked in the bottom third in the state of Virginia. Within the student fee is the athletic fee, and the percentage of our athletic fee is in the lower half as well." http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/co...53828414/1
3) Total announced new athletic facility spending is $70 million
4) VCU has the largest endowment behind UR, GTown and SLU
5) "Money raised in the athletic department went from $1.6 million the year before Teague arrived to $5.3 last year, to an anticipated $13 million for this year."

1. Georgetown
2. Marquette
3. Villanova
4. VCU
5. *Loyola (MD) (current associate Big East member in women's lacrosse, also private Jesuit)
6. __________?

Obviously Title IX is the given reason in the press release, but the timing is certainly interesting because the last VCU team added was in 1995 (women's soccer), coincidentally the year VCU joined the CAA...(the plot thickens).

Loyola has just joined the Patriot League for all sports. I am pretty sure their women's lacrosse team is joining the PL as well.. I really do not think UR's addition of Men's Lacrosse or VCU's addition of Women's Lacrosse is really going to mean anything.

This is kind of like saying Jill Stein got the most votes for president behind Barack Obama, Mitt Romney and Gary Johnson.

Since VCU is already roughly compliant with Title IX, what if this move is preparation to add football?

Maybe they've seen the writing on the wall re: Catholic 7 and are now positioning to be with the football Big East.

I realize they'd probably have to add another 2 or 3 women's sports to be balanced but they have to start somewhere.
