Your essay reminds me of an old friend (a Creighton grad) from Narragansett who passed away about a year ago. He could similarly outline the many, many ways the Sox erred in trading away Sparky Lyle for Danny (bleeping) Cater.

Thanks Wiz. Sorry about the loss of your friend. Mustve been a great guy. I love Narragansett-- we're only 2 miles from the town line.

Lol for him on Cater-for-Lyle... but don't forget we also got Mario Guerrero!! Lol. (luckily that trade was just before i followed baseball, though i felt its effects for the rest of the decade).

Lots of soul-crushing losses and inexplicable decisions thru the years by the Sox.

Sox fans used to have their own special jumping off points, where they decided to only follow casually due to psychological trauma. My father bailed after the 1949 heartbreak. My uncle after the 1978 playoff... and his son after they let Fisk go to the White Sox. A bunch left after Game Six in 86.

The pain was so deep that after the Patriots won in Jan 2002 over the Rams, fans poured into Kenmore Square and chanted "Yankees Suck!"... ouch... so sad.

And other trades-- lol... a young Ben Oglivie for 112-year-old Dick McAuliffe. A just-entering-his-prime George Scott for Marty Pattin, followed 5 years later by a past-his-prime Scott for a young Cecil Cooper... Ferguson Jenkins for John Poloni (sp)... Bill Lee for Stan Papi... keeping Zimmer 3 years too long... yikes !!

Great question. My answer is that it’s age dependent. There used to be an Omaha Cardinals affiliate and Bob Gibson was a Creighton guy who ended up in StL. I know a lot of older fans who still cheer for the Cards. Middle age folks say 35-50 tend to be Cubs fans because they were kids when Cubs games were on WGN every afternoon. Younger than that are probably split between Royals, Cards, Cubs, and whatever team is cool at the moment.

As home of the College World Series, it’s been fun to see so many future MLB stars as “kids” playing here. If you ever have a reason to be in Omaha during the year, make it during the CWS.

Regionally, it's mostly Cardinals, Cubs and Royals, plus a lot of fans who glommed onto the Yankees because they perceive them to be a winner. I don't follow baseball any more, but used to be a Sox fans because of my buddy and inbred hatred for the Yankees from my dad. Game 6 1986 remains one of the lowest points of my sporting life. An indescribably brutal day.

Baseball this Spring has been good with the pitch clock. Actually helps the game move from what i've found. It must keep the defense fresh too.

100% agree with you. Was painful watching some of the WBC games with no pitch clock. Was such a good advertisement for the pitch clock.

Yes, you could really tell the difference during the WBC !!... final game bottom 6th, Adam walked 3 guys, mustve taken 12 minutes for 3 batters.
