How is the league tougher with the TWO new hires. One of those hires was done at the expense of another league member. That move improved one program but hurt another, so it didn’t do anything to make the league better.

Pitino > Anderson
Cooley > Ewing

That's 2 out of 3, and like... not exactly marginal improvements.

Uh, wow.

Imagine if PC can convince Mack. Villanova may end up getting buried here if Neptune doesn't work out for us.

Mack has said he's sitting out this cycle. Now, I'd never say never about him going to another Big East school if/when he comes back to coaching. There are only so many jobs that are the right fit. But, I can't see him doing it this year when he's already made a verbal commitment to sit out the cycle. It sounds like both girls will be in college after next year and then they'll just have the son at home.

from the story:
According to the termination letter obtained by ESPN, Anderson was fired for "failure to create and support an environment that strongly encourages student-athletes who are in the men's basketball program to meet all university academic requirements," "failure to perform your duties and responsibilities in a manner that reflected positively on St. John's University ... in actions [that] brought serious discredit" to the school and "failure to appropriately supervise and communicate with your assistant coaches."

OMG. Please don't do it SJU.

Save yourself the legal fees. Don't go down the UConn Rabithole. We suffered long enough with the Ollie downfall and the yearslong legal battle.

UConn ended up paying up all that was due and some...

Sounds like a total overhaul of the roster. Soriano seems to be the only lock to come back, and was named the team captain. Sounds like there were a lot of problems behind the scenes with bad attitudes and character issues. We saw that during timeouts with the way the team would tune Anderson out. Anyway, Pitino has made a believer out of me. I think our days of being a bottom feeder in the BE are over for the time being. Would love to see a BET final soon between the Johnnies and UCONN, and set the record straight who really owns New York.

Slow your roll buddy!!!!!!

I kid I Kid. As a lifelong New Yorker... (even though I root for UConn) I would love to see this city have a thriving St. John's program. NYC deserves its home CBB team to be competitive.

Syracuse/UConn/Rutgers cannot claim New York like St. John's can.

That’s a net of +1. I don’t see how this means the whole league is better.

In the short term, the league is worse. You’re ignoring the fact that Providence had a tremendous recruiting year in place to add to Hopkins and Carter. They were potentially a top ten team next year. Now recruiting is shot and Bynum has already entered the portal. Who knows what else the fallout from this will be there. Pitino is cleaning house at St. John’s and Cooley has nothing to work with at Georgetown where they need a complete overhaul. Both of those are major rebuilding jobs, which will not happen overnight. We’ll have to wait and see if the league is better off as a result of this.

Things to watch in all of this are Pitino and Cooley. 70-year-old coaches like Pitino are usually maintaining what they have previously built, like Coach K and Jim Boeheim in recent years. There’s not much history of old coaches taking on major rebuilding projects at this stage of their lives. Larry Brown, every bit as good a coach as Pitino, tried it at SMU at a similar age. There’s no doubt that he turned the program around, but he only lasted 4 years and only got them to one NCAA tournament where they were one and done.

Cooley’s personal life appears to be in a shambles. Will a change of scenery solve his problems? Who knows? It could make them worse. Moving and changing jobs are 2 major life stressors. Things were cruising at Providence this year. At one point they had a 9-game winning streak and won 11 of 12. But then the cracks gradually started to appear and they ended the season on a 4 game losing streak and going 4-7 down the stretch. What happened? It would appear that Cooley’s personal problems undermined his professional success. Will moving to Georgetown make that all better? Georgetown probably didn’ypt know what they were getting. Pull up a seat and get out the popcorn. It should be interesting.
