I've said it before for Georgetown but a guy that I would consier for sure is Ron Hunter from Tulane. he has turned around that program. Just like he did Georgia State and IUPUI.

Hunter would be a great choice. I never thought anyone could make Tulane competitive. Also, oof, Jasper thinks someone in their 50's is too old... gonna make me depressed today, lol.

This whole sports year for Tulane has been remarkable. I mean they won the Cotton Bowl in football! And right now they're having their best year in hoops since 1997. Just incredible.

FWIW rumor seems to be that Pitino will end up with GTown. Doesn't sound like SJ even bothered to call.

If Georgetown or St. John's were smart, they'd go after Ron Hunter. I was hoping he would get an interview with Butler and come back to Indy. Who knows? Maybe he will eventually?

If that's true, damn! I liked Xavier having the conference's best coach. *pokes a few HLOH fandoms with a stick*

He’ll be 59 by the time he’s hired, meaning he’ll be in his 60s in his 2nd year.

Baggage aside, I’d hire someone like Rick Pitino even though he’s 10 years older than Hunter because he’s in great shape. Someone who looks like Hunter reminds me of Rick Majerus, another great coach. Guys like that make me nervous because too often they aren’t around to sustain what they started due to health issues, especially when the coach in question will soon be in his 60s.

It'd be funny if it leads to his son eventually taking over. You could do a lot worse than having 2 generations of Thompsons and Pitinos.

Sean Miller was asked at his weekly coaches, radio show, how a school like Xavier will compete with NIL. He gave an absolutely great answer. Basically, he said you do what you’ve always done to attract kids to Xavier, you sell them on the history of the program, the NCAA appearances, facilities including the arena and weight room which are 2nd to none in the country, the history of developing players, several who have gone on to the NBA. You sell them on the size of the school and the chance that they will get an education and not be just a number like at the large state schools, but somebody that their professors will know. Plus, he said the reality is those kids looking for a huge payday we’re probably never going to Xavier anyway. He didn’t seem the least bit worried about NIL, and basically gave Souley Boum as an example that he was able to attract Xavier over many other “big-name” play programs.

Miller gave a good answer, but what else was he going to say? That he can't compete? I guarantee you they came up with some dough for Boum, and he's clearly outperformed from what anyone expected. If people knew he would have this kind of year he would have gotten a lot more. Just this week Jim Boeheim was crying about Miami, Wake Forest, and Pitt buying themselves a team. He acknowledged that Syracuse is only paying their guys roughly 20-30K. What that's getting them is a middle of the pack team, in a bad ACC, with no chance of making the tournament. With average attendance around 25 thousand most years, do you think they'll be standing pat, or deciding they need to step up if they want to remain relevant.

Shaheen Halloway said earlier this year, that when he talks to a recruit the first question they ask about is NIL. There's no denying it's a real issue. I have a friend who recently had lunch with a TV guy most of us know. Part of their pre game routine is talking with the two coaches beforehand. He said all the coaches are paranoid about NIL, wondering who's trying to get in the ear of their better players, and what's being offered. It's probably more of an issue for Villanova then anyone else here, because they've established themselves as one of the true upper echelon programs, and can get in the door of most top recruits. Cam Whitmore didn't come cheap. The final three for him were Nova, North Carolina, and Illinois. He had also taken an official to Miami, who is also a big player in this market. There were things about Nova that appealed to him, but Nova needed to be competitive in the package they offered him.

If a school feels they're one piece away from making a deep run the next year, what's the price tag that would be put on that? And a final cryptic comment. An interesting case this off season will be Justin Moore. He would be a difference maker for a lot of teams. He doesn't get what Whitmore gets, but he's above the rest of Nova's guys. He's going to have offers, and how Nova's donors step up, will be telling to how committed they are in seeing Nova remain among the sports elite.

Think about what this means for a football school with 85 players on a roster. And what about schools in the South where baseball is also big time?

What about the rest? A lot of people are looking at SEC and B1G as the Power 2. Will the money be there for everyone else. In football, in particular, everyone else’s games are less meaningful. The Big XII has last most of their biggest markets and the PAC 12 has lost a chunk of theirs. Lots of contracts are coming onto the market. We’ll see. Has ESPN learned their lesson?
