But damn.. how much is St. John's paying to play at MSG? And does it make sense when the whole upper deck is empty?

That applies to Georgetown at the Capitol too

Spike Lee was there. Was he with LL Cool J? Couldn’t tell with a quick glance. They need MSG to be a place to be seen.

If Carnesecca Arena could be expanded to 8-9k (currently around 5,600) capacity it would be a viable full-time home court but I'm not sure SJ wants to lose the allure of MSG for optics/recruiting purposes. Georgetown is kind of screwed. Their on-campus arena is 2,200 capacity and they have no room to build.
This is my opinion. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

No doubt I know MSG gives St. John's some extra legitimacy as the city's college team and it does draw some additional folks to the game. There is no way I would've traveled tonight from Port Morris, Bx to Queens (Carnesseca) but its so easy to get to MSG and also so nice to just be there for cheap that it definitely draws. But my question wasn't rhetorical. I'm indeed curious to know how much they pay and whether they lose a ton of money on the deal? Would love to know the details... does MSG cut them some slack or is it just business as usual and they pay the same rate as everyone else?

GT is a discombobulated mess right now, but there's talent there and they play hard. Too much roster turnover, too many freshmen, too many Covid issues, but they'll get better. And Muhammad is a stud.

I expect them to win a few games, resulting in angina for their opponents' fan bases.

In fairness that MSG number is an extreme outlier for St. John's and mostly has to do with COVID. People in NYC take it more seriously than the vast majority of the country. I personally know several people who didn't go due to COVID. If you look at our MSG numbers vs Georgetown from the past 5-10 years they are all much higher than that. The most vocal fans on Twitter/forums are still going, but the average family is less likely to go now. Of course if the team wasn't so mediocre that'd also help a lot, but COVID is definitely the biggest factor.

And yes, St. John's absolutely needs MSG at a recruiting tool. Look at any recruit and they will cite MSG as a reason for committing.

Yeah, we are talking a city that dug mass graves because of COVID. They definitely would be more concerned with the current wave than most.

Last time it was 8,100 in 2020. Also was on a Sunday for St. John's hosting Georgetown. Still a poor crowd for this match up.

19,812 for the Knicks game the next day following Georgetown and St. John's this Sunday. (5,161)

That's still much higher than 5,161 this year, and also that year St. John's dramatically rose ticket prices which hurt attendance across the board (not to mention Mullin was just fired and we weren't good). Georgetown is also our lowest attended MSG game most years.

The prior year (2019) before ticket prices rose and when St. John's was a better team, we drew 17,801 vs Georgetown, 16,268 vs Providence, 18,529 vs Seton Hall and 19,812 vs Nova (sold out). Those were all of our MSG games that year I believe.
