Let's review Butler

Postby OmahaGuy » Sun Mar 14, 2021 9:20 pm

Hello everyone! I'm back!! It's that time of the year again. Let's go through our teams this year and analyze who's out, who (should) return (will mention players who got significant playing time) and who's coming in. This thread will be updated when necessary. Anyway, let's get into it! We begin with the Bulldogs of Butler

OUT
Nobody? Well, Markeese Hastings technically but he didn't get significant playing time. He's heading to Western Michigan

BACK
*Myles Wilmoth
*JaKobe Coles
*Myles Tate
*Bryce Golden
*Chuck Harris
*Aaron Thompson
*Bryce Nze
*Christian David
*Jair Bolden
*Bo Hodges

IN
*DJ Hughes
*Pierce Thomas
*Jayden Taylor
*Ty Groce (transfer from Eastern Michigan)

My 0.02:
Yeesh. An ugly season for the Dawgs. Not totally unexpected but you still hate to see it. I do think Harris and Tate could form one helluva backcourt combo in the future though. Otherwise, I'm not feeling too confident about Butler's future. Recruiting class doesn't impress me. Is LaVall's seat gonna warm up if Butler has another bad season? He hasn't exactly made me confident in Butler's future. What say you Butler fans?
UPDATE: With Butler returning damn near everyone, they absolutely should get better. A seasoned group of veterans and a healthy Scooby Johnson should really help the Dawgs next season. Can LaVall make it work? We'll find out in November!

Disagree. Laval did a great job after being dealt the worst hand with injuries and Covid. Tate, Harris and Golden form a good nucleus for next year. Coles looked great before he went down, so that's 3 top-notch freshmen. They might be bottom half next year, but this could be a solid team with the right transfers.

Bo has already indicated he is coming back. Also, the rumor is Aaron Thompson will be the only other senior returning for the bonus year.

Regarding the recruiting class, I would disagree. I thought they showed a ton of promise - but were dismantled by injuries (as was the entire Butler team).
Chuck Harris is already a star. Butler was without the top rated player in that class, Scooby Johnson, all season. He will provide a huge boost if he returns to form. Also, JaKobe Coles as looking like a Bryce Nze 2.0 before going down with an injury. One big concern is the Myles Tate injury suffered in the BET. Hopefully it doesn't end up being an ACL and costing him the '21-'22 season.

Butler's class coming in next year will fly under the radar, but I am very excited about. Pierce Thomas is a 6-6 G/F who will be the most athletic player to ever wear a Butler uniform. He was a state champion long jumper who shot 40% from 3 as a senior this year. He didn't play much AAU in HS due to track, so he is a little under the radar.

Overall, this season is hard to judge due to injuries and covid. The whole team got covid after the first game, causing a 3 week shutdown. During most of that time, the whole team was sick and couldn't practice. It especially hit our bigs hard. Nze lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks and Golden battled all season to get his strength back. But because of that, there wasn't really a OOC slate to get the team acclimated. They immediately came out of quarantine with games against Nova and IU.

As I mentioned, several injuries to key players this year.

Scooby missed the whole season (25 games).
Coles missed most of the season (19 games).
Bo missed most of the season (16 games).
Thompson (11 games).
David (14 games).
Plus Nze (2), Harris (1), Golden (1).

Overall, it was a very disappointing, and at times, hard season to watch. But I feel like the arrow is at least pointing up for Butler. At minimum, you'd think it would almost be impossible to have this many injuries in a single season again. That alone would dramatically help this team improve. I look for them to be in the middle of the pack next season, with a bright future the next two after that.

Oh my!! That's gonna sting real bad. I don't trust everything I see on Twitter but if that's true, I'm very sorry to hear that.

Torn ACLs mean you're out for a long time, that's for sure. But given that Butler's season ended just a few days ago, is he really going to miss ALL of next season? He's gotta return at least by midseason, right?

Also, thanks to Wizard and CB for providing some perspective on Butler's season. I'll be honest I didn't watch all that much of Butler this season. Covid and injuries took a toll on them for sure. I'm still at least somewhat pessimistic about their future. I'm not sure if Harris, Golden and Tate (once he's healthy) will be enough. I could be wrong and I'd happily be wrong because I want all teams in this league to do well. Maybe Coles and Scooby Johnson will emerge into studs.

Only time will tell...

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Butler guard Myles Tate will need offseason surgery after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during last week’s Big East Tournament.

Torn ACLs are now a 6-9 month rehab which means he's ready for the conference season next January.

It's all so premature to discuss next year. This year is going to be crazy with the potential for seniors to come back or to graduate transfer.
No point at breaking down rosters until they're finalized.

If Hodges and Thompson do come back that give Butler a huge lift. But lots of players say they're coming back right after the last game in the heat of the moment, but after they sit down and weigh it out, it rarely happens.

Butler does not seem like a tournament team even if all their seniors were to come back, so unless they add some transfer pieces, will be playing on Wednesday at MSG next year.

Thankfully, that's why the edit button is a thing. I'll happily update when necessary. For now, I'm just assuming players with "Sr" next to their name are gone and any other player that got significant playing time that's not a senior is staying unless they indicate otherwise

So literally every guy who was a Senior this year is coming back. Hodges isn't included in the tweet below because he was originally supposed to sit out all of last year and play in the coming year, so he was going to be playing again anyway.
