McDermott will undoubtedly be the preseason player of the year. Christon will be up there if he can improve his efficiency and Xavier does well. Lots of guys will be in that second group chasing McDermott though, and pretty much everyone but Butler is probably going to have someone that is going to have the numbers to be considered at least as part of an all-league team.

In the MVC the POY award typically went to somebody from the team that finished first, too. There were years where that resulted in just totally bizarre POY awards, with plenty of clearly better and more valuable players on other teams that stumbled -- think Adam Emmenecker, for example. Hopefully the Big East wouldn't be THAT stuck on the award just going to somebody from the team that ends up surviving in first place, regardless of individual merit. And if that's true about Porter not making any All Big East teams last year, then yeah it's pretty unpredictable.

I think that the logic of the POY mirroring the 1st place team is usually a sound one unless one of the other team's players has been an All-American two years in a row. If Creighton finishes in the Top 4 and McDermott has anywhere near the expected stats, he's the hands down winner. That would be unless a team finishes 16-2 and one player absolutely carries them. Vegas odds for McDermott would be significantly better than the odds for the rest of the field coimbined.

As talented as I think Semaj is this is a dumb question. I think 'BE POY McDermott or the field' is a much more legitimate question. After that you can pretty much make a case for the best player on your favorite team and it is hard to be wrong at this point in the year.

Yes it's going to come down to the reigning Division one scoring leader and two time all american vs. a 2nd string A-10 guard, while we just leave off the returning BE scoring leader and 1st team all BE guard. Just silly.

You're making yourself look silly. Christon was a freshman all American last year. He's also projected to be a lottery pick in next years NBA draft by one draft site and a 1st round pick by all the other sites.

I don't think he win BE POY, but I can see him making first team all BE by the the end of the year, and then being a top half 1st rd draft pick.

Along with the fact his supporting cast will look markedly different this year. Christon is primed to have a monster year.

What the hell is a freshman all-american? Is that a thing? I don't see him on any all-american list.
