I thought they were trying to match up teams that have traditional rivalries. DePaul vs. Marquette goes way back, and has the added Chicago/Milwaukee hatred. Butler vs. Xavier goes back a few decades, has been a pretty even series lately with a lot of fire behind it. As I understand it, Georgetown vs. St. John's and Villanova have also been around for a long time. Creighton just doesn't have a history with any of the other conference teams. That's why I think Creighton will get St. John's or Villanova (whichever doesn't get Georgetown) if the conference tries to recognize traditional, pre-existing rivalries.

Are the match ups going to be repeated every year from here on? If so, basing the match ups on recent performance is probably not the best way to go - over time the weak become strong and vice versa. Butler certainly has history with Xavier, however that game draws whether it is designated a rivalry game or not. If you just go by great games recently, MU would make a good rivalry game for BU. Geography - DePaul or Xavier. If increasing attendance is an objective maybe you want a match up that would otherwise be a weak draw - for BU maybe SHU. Football schedules often have a weak draw for their Homecoming game. In any case, If the match up is every year it will become a rivalry no matter how they do it.

Here just some scenarios i've thought of.

The Obvious:
SJU/GTown
Marq/DePaul
Prov/Nova
Butler/X
Creighton/Seton Hall

The not quite out there:
SJU/SH
GTown/Nova
Marq/But
X/Creighton
Prov/DePaul

A little out there.
SJU/Nova
GTown/Marq
SH/Prov
X/Creighton
But/DePaul

Way out there.
SJU/DePaul
GTown/But
X/Nova
Creigton/SH
Marq/Prov

I can't see St. John's or Villanova getting Creighton if the other gets Georgetown.

St. John's and Seton Hall is a pretty decent match up.
Villanova has a lot of history with Providence.
The original 5 (PC, nova, GTown, SJU, SHU) actually all have a lot of history together.

Regular Season Matchups From Late 60's Thru Early 80's:
Many years I couldn't find. I reached into the 80's to at least have 5+ years for each team.

I know each team's "rival" will be revealed with the schedule coming out soon, but wanted to look at the former historic matchups for each team going back to the pre-Big East days.

From the lists of common opponents for each school, I think it would go like this:
Georgetown vs St John's.
Marquette vs DePaul.
Butler vs Xavier.
Creighton vs Providence
(CU's only common opponent that wasn't an obvious rival already was PC).
Villanova vs Seton Hall.

Reasoning is:
1. Georgetown only used to play St John's and Seton Hall in the 70's, so St John's would work best.
2. Marquette and DePaul played twice every year in the 70's.
3. Xavier and Butler played twice every year in the MW City Conference.
4. Creighton's only multiple-opponent that wasn't taken yet was Providence (4 times at least, from '61 to '71).
5. Villanova and Seton Hall used to play every year, along with St John's, PC, DePaul and Xavier.

creighton had a pretty good rivalry with xavier going back. Played each other every year until xavier wouldn't renew contract.
Nebraska raised, Creighton by choice!

From 1980 to present, here are the number of games the 10 of us have played against each other:

I put an asterisk next to what I think would be the best choice based on these totals, plus the other post showing games from the 70's (where Georgetown played St John's regularly, and PC faced Creighton a number of years).

So maybe this isn't really a rivalry game after all?

UPDATE - 8/29 (6:00pm): New Big East media relations chief John Paquette has clarified to VUhoops that the end-of-season rivalry games will change from year-to-year. So, even if Villanova closes the 2013-14 season with Seton Hall this year, they could be scheduled for Georgetown next season.

"[T]hat does not mean every team will have one rival -- or the same rival -- on the last day of the season," Paquette explained.

In effect, the Big East has only decided to make the last day of the regular season a rivalry for each school. Which rival a school will play, however, can change on a yearly basis.

To me that is not a rivalry game - just TV spin for the last game.
