The Hoyas have now lost 25 straight conference games! Wow. When will the nightmare end?

I feel for Patrick Ewing, a great player and (seemingly) all-around good guy, who has now apparently shown once again that great players and beloved icons can't necessarily coach. Who else can you think of (other than some random guy at the only red team in our league) who fits Ewing's profile? Penny Hardaway at Memphis is a counter example to my point above. Who else came back to his college team after a dynamite pro career? How did he do as a coach?

This is a bit of bizarro world from what was happening in the 80's and 90's. Seeing this really hit me on how bad it is.

Chris Mullin and Patrick were the gods of the Big East in the ‘80s. Neither has worked out as a coach although Patrick seemed to have put in a lot more work preparing himself for the job. Sad to see.

I think new coaches have better results if they start at smaller colleges in smaller conferences. They can make coaching mistakes and will tend to not get burned so quickly compared to in higher level hoops. And fewer people are watching every move.
(or they suck at a lower level and don't get the big promotion).

With Mullin and Ewing, they were both in situations where it wouldve been insulting to ask them to start lower. Like, "Chris, before we are comfortable with you leading us at St John's, we need you to step away from Golden State and coach a few years at Stony Brook..."

Off the top of my head, Juwan Howard has had an Elite-8 and a Sweet-16, but Michigan was in a great spot unlike St John's and the Hoyas.

Ewing and Mullin *did* both make NT's at least.
