Time for New Big East to pick a leader

Date: April 9, 2013
Author: Mark Blaudschun

As has been the case for the past several months, the new Big East is involved in a power struggle between Georgetown and the rest of the league, with Marquette being the leader of the opposition, which may be too strong a word since there is a consensus about the need to move forward. The debate is on how to go about doing that.

The stakes are big time since the league–Georgetown, Seton Hall, Villanova, Providence, DePaul, St. John’s, Marquette and the three newcomers–needs to be operational sooner, rather than later.

With the NCAA tournament now over, the focus should be to entice NCAA Vice President of Men’s basketball championships Dan Gavitt into moving back to the new Big East as its first commissioner,

Hiring Gavitt should be a slam dunk move since he is the most qualified candidate available and would provide a link to the heritage of the Big East past–his father Dave founded the conference in 1979–as well as linkage to the NCAA.

There are some elements among the Catholic 7 group which wants to make a complete break from the Big East tradition of the past, which is beyond stupid.

Hopefully he's overstating it and or misinformed, but if he's accurate, I agree that any thoughts of ditching any BE legacy, history, tradition is ridiculous, surprising, and stupid, as that was one of the things the new league paid so much money to retain. Thoughts?

I'd really like to know what that means.

Probably means what it sounds like, treat it like a brand new conference. No records, no history.

After the fights over naming and such, that just seems odd to me.

Definitely would be deserving of "beyond stupid."

Did we just agree on something?

At least it doesn't say who was advocating the "clean break".

Clean break is ridiculous this conference screams Big East Basketball in not just name but the style of play and the schools. To give up on the history of a conference that's goal was the same common goal are schools have now, to be a collection of basketball playing mostly urban schools and form the best basketball conference in all the land. To give up the Big East our very own essence is colossally stupid. We are the Big East the only Big East there has ever been and our divorce with Mike Aresco and his football playing friends is something that I think would make Gavitt very proud. So goodbye traitors you are not welcome in the greatest Basketball(and Olympic sport) conference there has ever been. Don't come knocking when the AAC and ACC Crumble.

Thats nuts... why would you bargain for the name and history and then go for a clean break? You know i argued at length that the schools had a plan and most of this stuff is predetermined. However if these rumors and reports are true this might be one of the most spectacularly horrible business plans ever.

Oh well... hopefully the rumor mongers like jersey guy are just stirring up trouble... the schools are just working out finer details and all is well.

Just hire Gavitt and be done with it. He's the clear choice IMO.
