It's time to review Villanova

There’s a fine line between success and failure in a conference like the BE. So many games came down to the last 3-4 minutes. In years past we had the best in the business managing those last minutes on the sideline and we had absolute ice-water-in-their-veins assassins with the ball in their hands for a decade. Archidiacono-Brunson-Gillespie. Be honest, game on the line and those guys rise up to shoot. As opposing fans you always expected it to go in, right? And it usually did. At UConn, at CU, at MU, H vs MU, at Mich St, vs Iowa St were all games we were within a possession in the last 3-4 minutes and each game we just wilted. Many of those games without 2 of our top 3 players.

So is it Nep? Is it Arch 2.0 instead of Arch 1.0 at the end of games? Or maybe a combination of the 2. We didn’t have enough bullets to fire IMO. And let’s be honest Nep needs to find his way. But if a .500 record in one of the top conferences in America is our low water mark then we’ll be fine.

And not for nothing but this is a program that has won 3 NC’s and been to 6 FF’s in my lifetime (in 4 different decades). The fan base expects success and the administration is aware how much the BB program is the golden goose. If it’s not Nep you can fully expect that they’ll leave no stone unturned to find the right guy to lead the program.

Not looking to reignite the whole Neptune debate, but one criticism that seems fair is he hasn't set the world on fire with his recruiting. Nova's incoming class is ranked closer to 200 than it is to 100. in recent years they've excelled at recruiting the Boston to Washington corridor. But now with Pitino in NY and Cooley in Washington his job just got a lot tougher. Nova has been such a key to the leagues success, you don't want to see them fall off too much. Neptune needs to get it together recruiting wise, because so far the results have been disappointing.

I just wonder if the whole Villanova style that we've seen- redshirting guys, getting transfers who sit out a year, etc. so having super experienced rosters compared to everyone else- with the transfer portal now- is that style really going to be able to work going foward as much?

Jay's style had evolved over the years, and would have continued to evolve had he not retired. Nova will have to hit the portal hard for the upcoming season just to field a competitive team, but Neptune appears to be asleep at the wheel.

Wright is 9 years younger than Pitino. If Neptune has another bad year or two I wonder if he'd consider returning?

I do wonder about Neptune's recruiting. Should be a cakewalk to get atleast a top 100 recruit to Nova, it sells itself but so far it doesnt look great. He will have to hit the portal hard if he wants to be competitive next year (which is something Nova doesnt do often).

It wouldn't be very shocking, maybe even predictable, if Wright gets a coaching bug eventually. Hopefully that aligns with an appropriate time to move on from Neptune, but honestly I can't see him say no if the Knicks offered with Brunson and Hart on the roster.

I see Jay the opposite way. He's made his money, accomplished everything he really can, and now he's going to relax and enjoy it. Cash in behind the announcers desk for a few years.

With how stressful they say coaching is, I don't blame him. Don't be like boeheim and coach until you're nearly dead, go out and enjoy what you've earned.
