Before the pandemic Ohio State made over 200 million in athletic revenue. They'd can afford 13 mil. And to be clear, that 200 mil does not count boosters and alumni donations, which is no small amount.

Two points:

1. They're looking for the Columbus business community to step up:

- Ohio State hosted the event at the Covelli Center on campus to unveil an NIL Corporate Ambassador Program to encourage businesses to hire OSU athletes through the athletic department. Businesses get the athletes as endorsers and can provide internship and educational opportunities. And the athletes get paid.

- So Smith said the Buckeyes won’t get into the world of encouraging straight payments for recruits. Ohio State, both with its new internal program and with its outside collectives, continues to try to tie player payments to actions. On video screens at the event, possible player activities highlighted were brand endorsements, autograph signings, establishing camps, making appearances and promoting businesses.

Xavier is following this model for the most part - internal program and collectives - albeit not at that funding level!

I agree that this is going to be a mess for a few years - both N-I-L and the portal - while all this gets sorted out.

I still wonder about the locker room dynamic:

And while it might be tempting to look at $13 million for an 85-man scholarship football team as $150,000 per player, I think the better calculation is something closer to $500,000 each for the 26 guys you can’t live without.

Imagine being an "unfunded" or "underfunded" teammate blocking for a QB who drives a new Tahoe, etc. to the games and practice.

And now for what strikes me as being almost symbolic of the current state of collegiate athletics and the N-I-L:

You may take this as the ultimate fork in the road in terms of how you perceive this: either that it has reached full lunacy or just a couple of schools attempting to get creative about continuing to build their brands, enhance the status of a particular game and finding a unique opportunity to monetize a N-I-L opportunity. The NIL effect is starting to evolve into something that is far more positive than I initially thought.

Naturally far more Universities are forming separate NIL offices to navigate this new revenue stream. Initially businesses and other sponsors were targeting individual players and that will certainly continue to be the norm. However, there is some indication that some NIL deals could be made where the sponsor pays money directly to the university to distribute evenly among all players.

Has anyone else picked up on this?

The distributing equally is a current trend. I believe the script reads that universities can't be directly involved with NIL. That's why Opendorse/Influncr/other agencies and agents are involved.
Schools can monitor these companies/agents/other companies and of course the fan cartels...er Cooperatives/Combines - to sleuth out 'Pay-for-Play'. I believe athletes have to inform their schools of new/ongoing NIL contracts.
Congress won't be involved for a couple more years...possibly by 2024-25.
