The 50 million exit may not hold up in court as Maryland awaits the final verdict. Once the verdict is in and cost is way lower then the orginal 50 million fee, it will be, on your mark, get ready, and go, for the B12, SEC, and B12 to raid the ACC. Yes, 'Louisville, Syracuse and Pitt are all leaving the Big East as stated. However, what happens when the ACC loses up to 8 teams? There has been even talk about Syracuse being courted by the Big Ten and Louisville to B12. What would be the incenitive for Notre Dame to still join a conference with no future stability? I also would not be surprise if Dame has an out clause just like San Diego had with the Big East in the event if certain schools leave. Rumor schools to be leaving the ACC are North Carolina, Virgina, Gtech and possibly cuse to the B10. Florida St. Louisville, Miami and Virgina Tech to B12. And finally, NCST, Duke, and perhaps Clemson to the SEC. The Duke part would be to help increase the conference academic ratings. There was also talk about both DUKE and North Carolina joining together to the SEC and stay south. It should be interesting to see what happens with Carolina since the Comish of the B10 is a carolina graduate. If the aforementioned happens, you know there are going to be scbools that get left out in the cold. Perhaps the remaining ACC schools merge with the B7 or just leave altogether. Once court ruling is completed with Maryland, its going to be very interesting indeed.

Maryland and Florida State were the only two schools to vote against the increase in exit fee. The legal battle is whether the rest of the members could bind them to something they didn't agree to. That ruling will have no effect on those schools that agreed to it, and certainly not Notre Dame who agreed to it as a condition to them being admitted to the ACC.

The B10 has no interest in Syracuse after they added Rutgers. The B12 is not interested in Louisville either. They could have added them with WVU but B12 wasn't interested. After realignment, the ACC could very well resemble the old Big East which doesn't put Notre Dame any worse off. Just like the C7 splitting from BE was a last resort for those schools, Notre Dame joining the C7 ranks right around having their football team join a conference for them.

Even if all of that happens, it doesn't make it any more likely that ND joins the new conference. Notre Dame is going to affiliate itself with whatever group creates the best situation for its football program.

I'd also argue that if the ACC dies, it will be even more important for ND to be in a new football conference.

Notre Dame is not joining a conference that has no football.

There's also often issues with conferences not filling requirements, although that nets bad bowls.

Really? Name the high profile bowls, that aren't part of the new playoff, that don't have tie-ins with conferences. I suspect you are going to come up with a very short list.

That's not my point at all. They're probably screwed for quality bowl tie ins in the next year or few without an affiliation, but they can absolutely get into negotiations to have tie ins in the future. They've just had no reason to while affiliated with the Big East, it doesn't mean they can't. The other independents negotiate specific tie ins, to think Notre Dame cannot find some decent bowl to associate with them in any given year is crazy.

Frankly, you really have no point. Independents, to the extent they even have specific tie ins (of which I am not sure they really even do in any real numbers), those tie-ins are with the lowest tier bowls only. The major bowls are not going to negotiate tie-ins with Notre Dame and alienate their lucrative partnerships with specific conferences. More importantly, the conferences that have those agreements with the bowls are not going to allow the bowls to ace them out to take Notre Dame every so often.

Those partnerships between bowls and conferences change. Notre Dame is probably not going to be sneaking onto existing contracts, no, but as they open up they will be able to find partners. These bowls are profit seeking, to think not a single good bowl will listen to Notre Dame ...I just think it's crazy to think so. Notre Dame has had special access to the BCS bowls for all these years, yet you people don't think they can work their way into other good bowls? The other independents are nowhere near the brand that Notre Dame is, of course they aren't getting better bowl contacts.
