Big East Conference schedule - thoughts and reactions

Whatever the reasons, the crowd at Cintas is much more subdued when the students are on break. Maybe it's partly because many of our students come from Cleveland, a 4.5 hour drive from Cincinnati. It could also be that, while some still show up, they're nowhere near as organized. The band is also scaled way down. I'm guessing just about every school loses some of its home crowd advantage when its students are on break.

Anyway, whatever. I still think X makes noise this season.

Students miss:
12/31 vs. St John's (Christmas break)
1/4 vs. Butler (Christmas break)
1/9 vs. Marquette (Christmas break)
3/1 vs. Creighton (Christmas break)

I consider Butler to be our biggest rival so missing that one my senior year definitely hurts.

Isn't half of Xavier's student body from Ohio? Nothing stopping you from coming back to see that game. I know Georgetown has sparse crowds over winter break, but we're a lot less regional than Xavier is.

Well, if nothing's stopping me, I'm sure you'd be willing to fund my roundtrip flight from BWI to Cincinnati or Dayton.

Apparently, people who attend(ed) national universities are clueless when it comes to geography, and predisposed to making arrogant statements.

Even though over 50% of Xavier's students actually come from outside Ohio, I wouldn't try to convince a student from Cleveland that, due to the fact they're "in Ohio" they have it easier than one of their friends from, say Lexington, KY when it comes to making it to the Cintas Center.

The former faces a 4+ hour trip, whereas the latter can make it to Cincinnati in roughly 90 minutes.

Luckily, Creighton plays Xavier on a Saturday so I'll be making my way over to Cintas from Pittsburgh!

The majority of Xavier students do come from Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky the areas surrounding the city of Cincinnati. There's more students who go to xavier who live within driving distance of that school than Georgetown does. Sorry if that rubs you the wrong way. If seeing a specific game is a priority for you there's no reason you cannot travel to that game if you desire to. The Marquette game is 4 days before break for example there's no reason some students couldn't come back a few days early to attend that game. Especially if you get the word out. Last year Georgetown's final game of the season was against Syracuse over spring break but the university made a push for students to come back early from spring break to attend the game. And I would totally drive 4 hours to catch my team play our biggest conference rival especially since the game is at 2pm giving plenty of time to drive back the same day if you needed to. Not saying all fans are like that, but 4 hours is still driving distance in my book.

I'm not going to fuss with you about this. In fact, I agree that a 4 hour drive isn't over-the-top with respect to making it to a game, assuming that bad winter weather doesn't factor into it. Having noted that, that's eight hours of driving plus a two hour game with probably another one or two hours factored in for food/barhopping. So, that scenario may work for a day game, but it wouldn't be very practical for a night game.

Otherwise, you are off on Xavier's statistics, judging from the data for the class of 2016. The majority of Xavier's students do not come from within an expanded region around Cincinnati in the OH/KY/IN tri-state area; that area accounted for 289 out of a class of 1060. Expanding the radius out two hours grabs around 500 students from that class. Otherwise, with concentrations coming from Chicago, the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, that class comes from 41 states.

I get that Georgetown has a more national presence and diversified student body. I have no problem with that.

Two final comments:

Personally, I don't drive to games; I fly up from Ponte Vedra Beach,Florida when I'm able to make it to one or two games per season.

And, given what was a down season for us last year, Xavier still managed to come in ranked 43rd in attendance, averaging 9,781 per home game. I think we'll be okay in terms of delivering solid crowds at the Cintas Center, regardless of the number of gallons of fuel required to make that happen.

Dash covered most of the points I was going to respond with, but just a few more:
1. I am planning on coming back to school early for the Marquette game. However, I live off-campus in a house. (As of now...may change if the student body pushes for it) The students that live in on-campus housing probably won't be able to move in until Jan 11/12 because that is when the residence halls open. So you are incorrect in saying "there's no reason you cannot travel to that game if you desire to." This is likely only possible for students living in a 2 hour radius of Cincinnati. Let's try and avoid making absolute statements unless you are 100% positive about them.
2. I never said that Cintas Center is dead when the students aren't there. Fact is, a good number from the area still attend. The attendance is still high. (Last year, students were on break against big games vs. VCU, Memphis, just off the top of my head.) The rest of the arena is still filled with your normal fans. My point was that the atmosphere and the loudness of the arena is usually more subdued over breaks.

Did not mean to start a huge argument. I will respond to both posters in this point. Based on the stats xudash listed 500 out of 1060 people in the class live with in 2 hours of Cincinnati. So I think you proved my point.

for bmorex: I simple meant on a single person bases there's nothing stopping an individual person from attending a game over break if they so choose. Obviously basketball is not a priority so the price of returning to campus may not be worth it. That being said if someone makes basketball a priority and wants to attend the game, the dorms being closed will not be something that stops them. I'm sure everyone knows one person who lives off campus or lives close enough to school already that they can crash with them. I had friends who would do that when we attended Georgetown.

Again. Not a big deal this is a silly argument and I did not mean to offend anyone or the xavier fan base.
